Dan Savage is a bully, a hypocrite, and CERTAINLY not someone to be hailed as a hero.

That’s what he said about ace people. He’s also said a lot of shitty things about bisexuals (e.g. here) and trans* folks (some on that here and here) and others in the community. He’s also said a lot of racist shit (he repeatedly blamed POC for the passage of Prop 8 in California), he’s said fat shaming things, and when people asked him to stop using “retarded” in a derogatory way, he made a joke of it. So much for being against bullying.

He’s generally just a really shitty person, imo.

My main problem with him is that he’s set himself up as a reliable source for advice on sexuality and relationships (and people listen to him) without any real training or qualifications. That wouldn’t be so bad in itself, except that as the previous folks pointed out, he uses his platform to spew fat-, bi-, and transphobic messages. Not to mention his obvious disdain for anything even close to academic Queer Theory or Women’s Studies, his support for evolutionary psychology arguments about sexuality, and his conservative views on marriage (but at least he’s up front about these).

Fun fact: the night I met my partner, we bonded over how problematic the “It Gets Better Campaign” is.

Let’s not forget the time he called a rape survivor a “total shit” for not having sex with her husband because it was triggering her.
